Man shot and killed during Black Lives Matter protest in Texas

A man was shot and killed near a Black Lives Matter protest in Austin on Saturday night.

Police said shots rang out near East Sixth Street and Congress Avenue just before 10 p.m. local time. Police said they believe the victim, who was reportedly carrying a rifle, approached a vehicle, and one of the passengers opened fire on him.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police reported.

No other injuries were reported, and police said they have detained one suspect in connection with the incident.

Austin is one of dozens of cities that have experienced massive Black Lives Matter demonstrations following the death of George Floyd earlier this summer. Some of the otherwise peaceful demonstrations have devolved into widespread rioting, looting, and arson.

Federal law enforcement officials have said they believe so-called agitators have hijacked many of the demonstrations looking to cause chaos or commit violent crime.

President Trump has criticized the Black Lives Matter movement, leading members of which have called for the dismantling of major sections of the U.S. government and law enforcement system, saying the group has a “hateful” message that is harmful to police morale.
