School counselor accused of assaulting a student

A D.C. school counselor accused of sexually assaulting a student turned himself in to authorities over the weekend, officials told The Examiner.

Kenneth Smith, a District resident in his 60s, has been charged with first-degree sexual assault, Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Traci Hughes said Monday.

The charges stem from a report by a 5-year-old female student at Harriet Tubman Elementary School that Smith had assaulted her in one of the school’s bathrooms.

D.C. Public Schools spokeswoman Mafara Hobson said he has been placed on administrative leave.

Police were brought in immediately after the girl’s parents alerted the school to the allegation, she said. – Dena Levitz
