WATCH: Zelensky says WWIII ‘may have already started’

In a Wednesday interview with NBC Nightly News’s Lester Holt, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that World War III “may have already started.”

When asked if he shared concerns about certain actions triggering a world war, Zelensky said, “Nobody knows whether it may have already started. And what is the possibility of this war if Ukraine will fall, in case Ukraine will? It’s very hard to say.”

“And we’ve seen this 80 years ago, when the Second World War had started … nobody would be able to predict when the full-scale war would start,” he added.

The Ukrainian president also warned that it is the “whole civilization at stake.”

Zelensky delivered an address to Congress on Wednesday, seeking more assistance in the country’s fight against Russia.

In the speech, he implored President Joe Biden to help, saying, “You are the leader of your great nation. I wish you to be the leader of the world. Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.”

“Remember Pearl Harbor, terrible morning of Dec. 7, 1941, when your sky was black from the planes attacking you,” he said. “Just remember it. Remember, September the 11th, a terrible day in 2001 when evil tried to turn U.S. cities into battlefields, when innocent people were attacked from air. Just like nobody else expected it and you could not stop it, our country experiences the same, every day, right now at this moment.”

He added that Ukraine is grateful for all of the assistance the United States has already provided.

Afterward, Biden activated an additional $800 million in new security assistance for Ukraine, bringing the total of U.S. assistance to the country to $1 billion just this week.

Calling Zelensky’s address “compelling,” he announced, “We’re going to give Ukraine the arms to fight and defend themselves through all the difficult days ahead. We’re going to continue to mobilize humanitarian relief to support people within Ukraine and those who have been forced to flee.”
