Former President Donald Trump said he was unconcerned about the safety of former Vice President Mike Pence during the Capitol riot on Jan. 6.
Audio of an interview ABC Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl did with Trump in March was published by Axios on Friday and sheds more light on the former president’s train of thought when Pence and lawmakers were evacuated to safety after rioters stormed the building, disrupting the process of certifying the results of the 2020 election.
“No, I thought he was well protected, and I had heard that he was in good shape. … I had heard he was in very good shape,” Trump said.

Karl, who has a book, Betrayal, coming out soon, told late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert on Monday he was able to see photos of Pence hiding underground that the former vice president’s team did not want him to publish.
In one of the photos, Karl said an aide was showing Pence a tweet from Trump slamming his vice president for not having “the courage” to try and overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The Jan. 6 House committee has been investigating the Capitol riot, which includes a look at Trump’s actions.
Trump has already been impeached by the House on a charge of inciting an insurrection but was acquitted by the then-GOP-controlled Senate. He sued the Capitol riot panel and the National Archives over claims of executive privilege to stop investigators from obtaining hundreds of records. He scored a victory on Thursday when an appeals court granted a stay preventing the delivery of the first batch of documents on Friday.
