Biden vetoes GOP resolution repealing EPA pollution rule

President Joe Biden vetoed Republicans‘ efforts to roll back an Environmental Protection Agency standard related to vehicle pollution.

Biden announced his veto on Twitter on Wednesday.

PUSH TO ADD NEW LONG-HAUL FLIGHTS AT REAGAN NATIONAL SHIFTS TO SENATE

“Earlier, I vetoed a Republican resolution to repeal an EPA standard that will make our air cleaner and prevent thousands of premature deaths by limiting hazardous heavy-duty vehicle pollution. This would take us backwards in our fight against air pollution, so I’m blocking it,” Biden said.

The House passed its resolution on May 23 that would cancel the EPA’s heavy-duty vehicle emissions rule that the agency finalized in December. The Senate passed the resolution in April.

Supporters of the resolution, mainly Republicans, believe the emissions rule will drive up the prices of trucks and products that they transport. However, the EPA estimated the rule would reduce the risk of respiratory and other illnesses from vehicle emissions.

The rule took effect in March but doesn’t apply to new vehicles until model year 2027. The EPA estimated it would result in 860 to 2,900 fewer premature deaths in 2045.

This year, Biden has issued vetoes on several other energy and environment-related rules, including a resolution to cancel the Biden administration’s Clean Water Rule and cancel a moratorium on solar tariffs.
