The Democratic candidate running to replace Tom Price in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District doesn’t actually live in his district.
Jon Ossoff said in an interview with CNN Tuesday that he doesn’t live in the 6th District right now because he’s living near Emory University to support his girlfriend. That means he won’t be able to vote for himself.
“I grew up in this district, I grew up in this community. I’ve been living with my girlfriend Alicia of 12 years down by Emory University where she’s a full-time medical student,” Ossoff said, “and as soon as she completes her medical training, I’ll be back up the street 10 minutes in the district where I grew up but I want to support her in her career and do right by her.”
Ossoff is leading the polls for Tuesday’s election, but needs to clear 50 percent in order to avoid a runoff election. While Ossoff is the leading candidate, the combination of Republican candidates has a higher percentage than Democrats in the district.
The district has been reliably Republican in the past, but only went for President Trump by 1 percent.
The special election to replace Price, now the secretary of health and human services, is one of a few special elections widely seen as a referendum on the early months of President Trump’s presidency.
