A Maryland bill that would crack down on for-profit colleges in the state is advancing in the House following passage by the Senate.
The House Appropriations Committee is scheduled to hear testimony on the measure on Tuesday.
The bill, which passed by a unanimous vote in the Senate, would regulate for-profit colleges operating in Maryland, including the Washington Post Co.’s Kaplan University, DeVry University and the University of Phoenix.
Under the bill, for-profit colleges would have to gain approval from the Maryland Higher Education Commission to operate in the state.
The schools also would be prohibited from paying recruiters bonuses or other compensation based on the number of students they enroll.
