GOP senator: Attacks on Trump U judge are an ‘off-ramp’ for Republicans

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham suggested Tuesday that Donald Trump’s ongoing criticism of a federal judge’s Mexican heritage is the “off-ramp” for Republicans looking to rescind their support.

“This is the most un-American thing from a politician since Joe McCarthy,” Graham told the New York Times. “If anybody was looking for an off-ramp, this is probably it.

“There’ll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary,” he added.

Graham’s latest comments come weeks after he discussed the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s foreign policy in a phone call he described as “cordial.” Nevertheless, Graham, a former White House hopeful himself, has remained committed in his opposition to Trump.

The South Carolina senator joins several Republican lawmakers in his denouncement of Trump’s attacks on U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is presiding over a civil fraud case involving Trump University.

Curiel was born in Indiana, but Trump claims his Mexican heritage is an “inherent conflict of interest” and prevents him from handling the case impartially.
