The Mayo Clinic calls burnout “a special type of work-related stress — a state of physical or emotional exhaustion that also involves a sense of reduced accomplishment and loss of personal identity.” While the term is not new, it rose to prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic as remote workers blurred the lines between their personal and professional lives while working from home, and in-person workers dealt with the added burden of avoiding illness or navigating mitigation efforts.
