Callista Gingrich confirmed as US ambassador to the Vatican

The Senate on Monday voted to confirm Callista Gingrich to serve as President Trump’s ambassador to the Vatican.

She was confirmed in a 70-23 vote Monday evening.

Gingrich, 51, is a former House Republican aide who is married to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga. The two met while she was working on the Agriculture Committee.

Newt Gingrich was an early supporter of President Trump’s candidacy and serves as an informal adviser to the president.

He plans to live part-time in Rome with his wife, whose title is officially Ambassador to the Holy See, the leadership of the Catholic church.

The position is now officially vacant. Louis L. Bono is serving as a placeholder.

Callista Gingrich married Newt Gingrich in 2000, and converted her husband to Catholicism. She is a member of the choir at the Basilica in Washington, D.C.
