Special Counsel Robert Mueller met Wednesday with the top two lawmakers on the Senate Intelligence Committee.
“We had a constructive meeting with the special counsel today and we look forward to future engagements,” said Chairman Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Vice Chairman Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., in a joint statement.
Mueller is leading the federal government investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, and had not met with the two committee leaders since being appointed one month ago by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
The Senate Intelligence Committee has its own ongoing investigation into Russia, which has been moving slowly.
The committee has asked former FBI Director James Comey turn over any and all memos pertaining to conversations he had with President Trump. Burr and Warner have also requested Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe turn over any notes or memos prepared by Comey “regarding any communications he may have had with any senior White House or Department of Justice officials.”
It is unclear if Mueller is willing to share those memos with the Senate panel.
Mueller’s meeting happened amid rumors that President Trump was considering firing Mueller, but the White House has since thrown cold water on that idea.
