Police are warning Virginia residents to be wary of scammers who try to dupe people into paying non-existent red light camera tickets.
Vienna police issued an alert Friday about a scam in which someone calls victims and tells them they were caught on camera running a red light, need to pay a fine and could be arrested if they don’t pay. The caller then says the victim can take care of the payment over the phone using a credit card.
Vienna doesn’t have red light cameras, but nearby jurisdictions, such as Arlington and Falls Church, do. Those cameras have only been active for about a year. Scammers may think people don’t know procedures for paying tickets.
Vienna police spokesman Bill Murray said no Vienna residents have reported being victims in the scam but police are warning people to be on alert because similar fraud cases have been reported in other areas.
