Megan Rapinoe says ‘equal pay’ was her favorite memory of playing for US soccer

U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe said Sunday that her favorite memory of playing U.S. soccer was “equal pay.”

Rapinoe, 38, made her comment after she missed a penalty kick on Sunday, marking an end to her time on the United States women’s national team after the team lost in penalty kicks to Sweden in the round of 16 in the World Cup. The athlete and activist announced earlier this year in July that she will retire soon, with this World Cup marking her fourth one with the team.

“I mean, probably equal pay chance after the final,” Rapinoe said in a video shared on social media. “And I think, you know, they were saying equal pay but could have been saying a lot of things.”

Rapinoe added that her team had always “fought for so much more,” adding that that was “the most rewarding part for me.”

The soccer player has been the subject of criticism from many conservatives regarding her views, including her support for transgender athletes competing against biological women. In July, she said she would “absolutely” support and welcome transgender athletes onto the U.S. women’s national team, even if a transgender athlete replaced a biological woman.

Riley Gaines, a former championship swimmer-turned-women’s sports advocate, has criticized Rapinoe’s stance for welcoming transgender athletes to women’s sports, noting that Rapinoe is “actually someone who fought for women in sports” but that by welcoming transgender athletes, she is “undermining her fight entirely.”

Last month, Netflix announced that it will make its next sports docuseries on the U.S. women’s World Cup team. The docuseries will feature Rapinoe.
