A Maryland fire crew rescued a child from a locked gun safe on Tuesday.
The child’s parents called 911. First responders rescued the 5-year-old by breaking through the back wall of the safe. The extraction was conducted similarly to how firefighters would traditionally handle a motor vehicle extraction with the jaws of life and other tools.
The child was in the safe for at least 40 minutes. He or she (officials have elected not to reveal the child’s gender) was said to be in “good spirits” after the rescue and did not require medical attention. At this time, it is unclear how the child got into the safe.
Howard County Fire Department spokesman Brad Tanner is warning parents to check their homes for potential dangers to their children.
“Hide-and-seek could be a very dangerous game for a kid,” he said.
