Nonprofit law clinic faces allegations of transphobic culture

A law clinic dedicated to lake and river rights stands accused of perpetrating a transphobic work culture.

The nonprofit Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund saw seven of its 15 staffers leave since last June. Three of the seven reported they left on account of transphobia.

The clinic, which actor Mark Ruffalo once produced a documentary for, has faced similar allegations, writing in a statement in February that “recent events have prompted us to tell more of our personal story.”

“We are firm in our support of human and civil rights for all people, no matter how they identify themselves, including the transgender community, without exception,” the CELDF’s statement read. “Those rights demand the respect of everyone, and we disagree utterly with those taking a different position.”

Executive Director Stacey Schmader confirmed that some were “not respecting other people” by not using their preferred pronouns.

Ohio Organizer Tish O’Dell was also reported to have made a transphobic comment, musing that chemicals in the water might be related to people identifying as transgender.
