WATCH: Whoopi Goldberg says Holocaust was ‘not about race’

The Holocaust was “not about race,” according to Whoopi Goldberg.

The left-leaning host of ABC’s The View argued Monday that race was not a factor in the systematic killing of millions of Jews and other “undesirables” because the victims of the Nazi killings were “white groups.”

“The Holocaust isn’t about race,” Goldberg, born Caryn Elaine Johnson, said. “No, it’s not about race.”

When her co-hosts insisted that it was, citing the fact that the Nazis viewed groups such as Jews and Gypsies as different and inferior ethnic groups, Goldberg stood pat.

“It’s not about race,” she repeated. “It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about.”

“But it’s about a white supremacist going after Jews and Gypsies,” Ana Navarro challenged Goldberg.

“But these are two white groups of people,” Goldberg retorted.

“You’re missing the point …The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re black, or white, cause black, white, Jews, Italians, everybody eats each other.”

The debate originated with a discussion of the decision by a Tennessee school district to remove the book Maus by Art Spiegelman from its curriculum given its “inappropriate language” and nudity, according to a report.

Maus tells the story of Spiegelman’s parents, who struggled to survive the Holocaust in Poland.

“If you’re uncomfortable, if you hear about Maus, should you be worried? Should your child say, ‘Oh my god, I wonder if that’s me?'” Goldberg asked. “No, that’s not what they’re gonna say. They’re gonna say, ‘I don’t want to be like that.'”
