US military helicopter crashes in Western Iraq

A U.S. military Black Hawk helicopter with seven personnel aboard crashed in Western Iraq on Thursday, resulting in several casualties.

The helicopter went down near the border of Syria and a U.S. official told ABC News that at least some of the passengers have died.

The official said that there was no indication of hostile fire, but the possibility hasn’t yet been dismissed.

The coalition to combat Islamic State, Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve, said rescue teams were responding to the scene of the crash and there would be an investigation.

“A U.S military aircraft has crashed in western Iraq with U.S. service members aboard. Rescue teams are responding to the scene of the downed aircraft at this time. Further details will be released when available,” the coalition said in a statement. “An investigation will be initiated to determine the cause of the incident.”

The Pentagon estimates 5,262 U.S. service members are serving in Iraq.
