Annual rites of spring, such as the Flower Mart and Waterfront Festival, continue in Baltimore City this weekend. Sunday marks the 29th opening day of the annual Baltimore Farmers? Market at Holiday and Saratoga streets underneath the Jones Falls Expressway.
Originally located at Market Place on Pratt Street, the Farmers Market was established so that residents could enjoy fresh produce straight from local Maryland farms. Its instant popularity necessitated the move to the sheltered location and the larger space of the current location.
Tracy Baskerville, communications director at the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts, can hardly contain her excitement.
“Oh yes, I?ll be there,” she says. “This year will be extra special because we?re sprucing up the columns and the walls surrounding the market with beautiful murals.”
At 10 a.m., the public is invited to the mural dedication showcasing 10 colorful paintings created by local artists.
Their work depicts city and urban agriculturists, fruit and crops.
The Baltimore Island Steel Band will be on hand to perform for the shoppers as they select the best deals on produce, herbs, crafts and jewelry.
“Fifty farmers set up stands and bring their produce,” Baskerville said. “The market is not at full capacity yet because many crops will not be in until mid-June.”
Still, she notes, there will be so much to see and buy, including the freshest of fruits, vegetables, eggs and a variety of breads. Food vendors add a culinary touch to the market with popular pit beef sandwiches, pastries, cheese and gourmet treats. Additionally, the market has added many new concessionaires.
“There will also be a chance to talk to the [mural] artists and master gardeners for tips,” Baskerville noted.
While the market currently had filled all of its vendor positions, Carole Simon with the BOPA is compiling a waiting list and can be reached at 410-752-8632.
“The market provides such a sense of community,” Baskerville adds. “And it is such a nice atmosphere.”
