‘We are incredibly proud’: Johnny Depp’s star lawyer named law firm partner

Brown Rudnick, a law firm, named Johnny Depp’s star lawyer Camille Vasquez a partner Tuesday.

“I am delighted that Brown Rudnick has given me its full vote of confidence by having me join the partnership,” Vasquez said. “I’m proud of the uniquely talented team I’ve had the privilege to lead, which exemplified teamwork and collaboration, and I look forward to continuing to represent Brown Rudnick’s culture of excellence.”

Partner announcements are typically made during the beginning of the fiscal year. This most recent announcement, however, comes less than a week after Vasquez helped win Depp’s defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard.

“We are delighted to welcome Camille to the partnership,” Chairman and CEO William Baldiga said. “Historically, we have reserved this announcement for the end of our fiscal year. But Camille’s performance during the Johnny Depp trial proved to the world that she was ready to take this next step now. We are incredibly proud of her and look forward to what she will accomplish as our newest partner.”

Vasquez took the internet by storm during the six-week trial, making waves after her contentious cross-examination of Heard and even sparking rumors of a relationship with the Pirates of the Caribbean actor.

She graduated from the University of Southern California magna cum laude in 2006, and she later graduated from Southwestern Law School — which is ranked between 147 and 192 among the best law schools, according to U.S. News — in 2010. Prior to joining the firm, Vasquez was an attorney at a different Los Angeles-based firm, according to Brown Rudnick.

She further earned recognition from The Best Lawyers in America, which named Vasquez among its “Ones to Watch” in 2021.

Her team member in the high-profile Depp trial, Benjamin Chew, is also a partner at the firm. Chew had previously worked for Depp, winning two fiduciary cases in Los Angeles.

Chew and Vasquez’s recent victory came on June 1, when a jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard was also allotted $2 million in compensatory damages.
