D.C. is the nation’s No. 1 “green power” community, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
The District earned the recognition by purchasing 8 percent — that’s 756 million kilowatt-hours, or the equivalent of taking 102,000 cars off the road — of the power from renewable resources like wind, solar, or biomass.
Mayor Vincent Gray said the title is an honor.
“We are sending a message to other communities across the county that supporting clean power is a sound business decision and the right thing to do,” he said.
An EPA Green Power Recognition Ceremony will be held Monday at Phelps Career High School in Northeast, which will kick-off an effort to increase District green power purchases by a third (to 10 percent) by the end of August.
