Ilhan Omar campaign keeps new husband’s political firm on payroll

Rep. Ilhan Omar’s campaign paid her husband’s political firm nearly $300,000 this year, according to campaign finance filings.

The Minnesota Democrat’s campaign paid E Street Group, which was founded by her husband, Tim Mynett, $292,000 for travel, advertising, fundraising, and other services between January and March.

Omar’s relationship with Mynett, whom she married earlier this year, has been scrutinized for months after Mynett’s ex-wife said in a divorce filing that the Democratic political consultant was having an affair with the congresswoman. Mynett denied the affair.

In March, the congresswoman defended the campaign’s payments to E Street, saying the campaign pays fair market value for the firm’s services.

“My relationship with Tim began long after this work started,” she tweeted. “We consulted with a top FEC campaign attorney to ensure there were no possible legal issues with our relationship. We were told this is not uncommon and that no, there weren’t.”

Omar’s campaign paid Mynett’s business more than half a million dollars in 2019. She hired the firm during her first run for Congress in 2018.
