Less than half of Americans know 6 million Jews killed in Holocaust

A poll found that less than half of Americans know how many Jewish people were killed in the Holocaust.

The Pew survey asked American adults a number of questions related to the Holocaust. When asked in a multiple-choice format how many Jews were murdered under the Nazi regime, only 45% answered “approximately 6 million,” while 29% said they were not sure.

Respondents were also asked how Adolf Hitler came to power, with only 43% answering that he became the chancellor of Germany through a “democratic political process.” A quarter of those surveyed said they believe Hitler became leader by “violently overthrowing the German government,” and 28% said they were unsure how he obtained power.

Of those polled, only 69% were able to pinpoint the Holocaust sometime between the years of 1930 and 1950, while 18% were unsure or think that it happened sometime before or after that date range.
