WATCH: Ronald Reagan’s 1985 Thanksgiving message about liberty

In President Reagan’s 1985 Thanksgiving message to the nation, he said that “as Americans, we have many things for which to be thankful, none is more important than our liberty.”

As the Cold War raged, Reagan listed several differences between America and other countries in the world, including freedom of religion, freedom of the press and the right to limit the government.

“While millions live behind walls, we remain free to travel throughout the land to share this precious day with those we love most deeply, the members of our families,” Reagan said.

Reagan had met with Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev for the first time on Nov. 19, about a week before his speech was delivered.
