Democratic leaders in Congress warned Thursday that President Trump’s chaotic administration is a real risk to the safety and well-being of Americans and that people should pray it all works out for the best.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is particularly troubling. She and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Mattis was one of the few stable officials in Trump’s government.
“It’s just all the more reason for us to pray for our country,” Pelosi told reporters when asked about Mattis. “This is a very sad day for our country.”
The impending government shutdown is another reason to worry, they said.
“There is chaos now in this administration,” said Schumer. “This week was one of the most chaotic weeks we’ve ever seen in American government, and amazingly, they want to close the week, President Trump does, by shutting down the government.”
Schumer added, however, that there is “still hope” of averting a shutdown if Republicans take up one of two Democratic ideas to consider bills that don’t include any funding for President Trump’s border wall. That seemed unlikely, as Republicans were pushing to pass a bill that spends $5.7 billion on Trump’s proposed border wall.
That GOP effort had Pelosi worried that Republicans were following Trump’s lead, no matter what he proposes.
“The worse he gets, the more they rally around him,” she said after she questioned if Trump believes in “governance.”
“The president is doing everything that he can to shut the government down,” she said. “You have to ask the question, why? Does he not believe in governance? Does he not care about the American people?”
“Today’s events have made one thing clear: President Trump is plunging the country into chaos,” Schumer said.
