Memorial ceremonies for Sen. John McCain, who died last Saturday at 81, continued today as a motorcade bearing his body from the Capitol, where he had lain in state Friday, stopped at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
McCain’s wife Cindy McCain and their children laid a wreath at the wall to honor all veterans of the conflict. McCain spent more than five and a half years as a prisoner of war in the country.
Thousands filed past McCain’s casket on Friday, waiting in line for hours in the Washington, D.C. heat to pay their respects. An earlier ceremony in the Rotunda saw remarks from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, and Vice President Mike Pence on the senator’s legacy.
About 3,500 mourners gathered at North Phoenix Baptist Church on Thursday for a public ceremony to say goodbye to Sen. John McCain, who died last Saturday at 81. His family had announced last week he was ceasing medical care for his brain tumor.
McCain laid in state at the Arizona Capitol, where approximately 15,000 people filed past his casket, following a private ceremony. The public memorial for McCain, a former prisoner of war and two-time presidential candidate, featured former Vice President Joe Biden, McCain’s chief of staff Grant Woods, and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, among others.
The Associated Press reported the memorial’s speeches featured humorous anecdotes about the late legislator and the speakers and participants were both racially and ethnically diverse.
McCain’s body is next headed to Washington, D.C., where he will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Friday before a funeral at the National Cathedral on Saturday.
