Metro riders have long complained about the transit agency’s spotty customer service. But now the boss has noticed, too.
General Manager Richard Sarles caught one employee “displaying inappropriate behavior while in uniform” while riding the Red Line over New Year’s weekend.
He admonished workers to shape up in a newsletter to all Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority employees sent last week:
We must conduct ourselves in an appropriate manner when wearing anything that identifies us as a WMATA employee, whether on duty or not. Please avoid any action that diminishes the confidence of our customers in our ability to operate a professional, safe and reliable transit system. Remember, as WMATA employees, we are public servants who must be aware of our behavior at all times to make sure our actions provide a positive image of our fellow employees and the entire agency.
As for the nature of said bad behavior? Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said Sarles observed an employee violating the “no eating/drinking” policy while in a station.
