President Trump addressed the criticism first lady Melania Trump received from some members of media after being photographed wearing high heels on her way to Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey last month.
At a rally in Alabama on Friday, where Trump trumpeted his support for Sen. Luther Strange in the upcoming run-off contest, he made light of the fact that Melania Trump did in fact change into more practical shoes when she arrived in Texas.
“My wife respects the White House greatly,” Trump said. “When she leaves the plane, we are going to Texas where they have the hurricane, and she leaves the plane, and she is dressed appropriately for the White House because we respect the White House a lot.”
“And she is wearing high heels, like many of you would do, and they went after her,” he added. “But she didn’t know. And when she got out of the plane in Texas, she was wearing sneakers, which she had with her. And they know it was dishonest, but that’s the way it was. They said she wore high heels, going to go into the floods with her high heels.”
Trump noted his wife’s popularity, which has reached a 44 percent approval rating, according to a recent CNN poll.
