Regional transportation forum to discuss future concerns for D.C. area

Transportation experts from the region and the state will give insight Thursday about future concerns in Washington-area transportation.

Scheduled speakers at the forum include representatives from the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board, and the Northern Virginia and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit authorities. Alexandria speakers will include representatives from the Transportation Task Force, Transit Corporation and Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services.

“The panelists all have different perspectives of what lies in the region’s future as far as transit goes,” said Tom Culpeper, deputy director of the city’s transportation department. “We’ve asked them to talk about their perceptions of major issues and how they’ll need to deal with them in a 10-, 20- or 30-year horizon.”

This is the first such forum Alexandria has coordinated. The City Council decided it would be a good thing to do for the community, Culpeper said.

The forum will not discuss specific plans or actions but will provide an overview of future issues, he said. Each panelist will give opening remarks before answering questions from the audience.

The forum will be moderated by Steve Eldridge, whose “Sprawl and Crawl” column appears in The Examiner.

The forum begins at 7 p.m. in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office auditorium. For information, call Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services at 703-838-4966.
