Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., disputed Secretary of State John Kerry’s assertion that the refugee application process for Muslims does not put Americans in greater danger than accepting any other group, during an interview on Fox News’ “Your World.”
“That is absolutely wrong, Charles. We believe we have now over 580 people that have been convicted of terrorism in the united States since 9/11. Almost all of those were from Islamic countries,” Sessions said. “We know that Syria, in particular, the European investigators and law enforcement are saying that two groups are moving into Brussels, Belgium.”
The chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest lambasted the secretary of state and former top diplomat Hillary Clinton for pushing to increase the number of Syrian refugees by 650 percent.
“Hillary Clinton wants to increase the number of Syrian refugees from 10,000 to 65,000. The experts have told us we have no ability to investigate and verify the backgrounds of these individuals. Other experts have told us that the terrorists are attempting to infiltrate the refugee movement,” Sessions said. “I think he is totally wrong on that. The facts dispute him.”
Sessions, who endorsed Donald Trump in February, has applauded the presumptive Republican nominee’s plan to temporarily ban Muslim refugees and immigrants from entering the U.S. until the religion’s connection to the Islamic State is better understood or there is a way to conduct better background checks on applicants.
