Mayor Vincent Gray has proposed raising taxes on those who earn $200,000 or more in his budget proposal for fiscal 2012.
Gray’s proposal creates a new tax bracket, taxing those who earn $200,000 or more at 8.9 percent to raise about $35 million.
The move comes as a surprise to many after the mayor as recently as last week said he didn’t “expect” any increases to broad-based taxes such as income, sales and property.
It also may set up a showdown between Gray and Council Chairman Kwame Brown, who has strongly suggested he would oppose an income tax increase.
