Two-thirds of conservatives say social media censoring them: Poll

Two-thirds of conservatives believe social media companies are biased against them and censor right-leaning content from being shown as widely as liberal or nonpartisan ideas, according to the results of a poll released Wednesday.

Sixty-five percent of “self-described conservatives” say companies like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are intentionally censoring their content, the conservative Media Research Center found in a survey conducted by McLaughlin & Associates.

Ten percent disagreed with the majority and one-quarter of respondents were unsure.

When specifically asked about Facebook, 67 percent of self-described conservatives said they trust the company less than one year ago.

As a result, nearly 7 percent reported having previously abandoned the popular website. Another 22 percent said they are considering deleting their accounts.

“These numbers are devastating to any CEO responsible for addressing the concerns of his customer base,” MRC President Brent Bozell said in a statement. “These trends should set off alarm bells at Facebook headquarters. They are bleeding a major customer base.”

Bozell said conservatives’ concerns about using Facebook is a consumer issue that the company should look to rectify.

The online survey was conducted Aug. 22-27 among 351 self-described conservatives and had a 5.2 percentage point margin of error at a 95 percent confidence interval.
