Bernie Sanders teases 2020 bid: ‘If I run’

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., sent out a fundraising pitched Thursday headlined, “If I run.”

In the email, the self-proclaimed democratic socialist shared what he said is his answer anytime someone asks if he will run for president in 2020.

“Whenever I am asked about running for president in 2020, I answer that if I am the best candidate to beat Donald Trump, then I will probably run,” he said. “That is the truth.”

Asking for $3 donations, the balance of the email talks about fighting the “agenda” of the “political, financial and media elite.”

Sanders ran a surprisingly competitive campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, ultimately losing out to Hillary Clinton.

There has been widespread speculation that the 77-year-old may try again, but the senator has only so far teased that he is considering another tilt.

The email comes on the same day that a big New York Times report was published about how some of his 2016 followers are looking to support other potential candidates for the Democratic nomination.

Sanders’ message spoke of the importance of “progressives” sticking together and standing up to the likes of President Trump.

“In 2016 we faced the kitchen sink. If we run again, you should expect no less. But the political revolution is stronger and larger than ever, and they will be no match for us if we’re in this fight together,” Sanders said.
