Mfume will chair African American Heritage Festival

RaynFall, a traditional African dance troupe, kicked off a news conference at City Hall Monday announcing the lineup for this year?s African American Heritage Festival. Mayor Sheila Dixon was joined by former U.S. Rep Kweisi Mfume, honorary chairman of the festival, at City Hall to promote the annual mix of black culture and music taking place July 6 to 8.

“We are excited to welcome the heritage festival,” Dixon said. “Thanks to the stewardship of Kweisi Mfume, it is now one of the premier cultural events in the mid-Atlantic region.”

The festival will include musical preferences by R&B vocalist Patti Labelle, Charlie Wilson and The Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards.

Festival organizers also said there was a “secret” performer who would be announced in June. The $600,000 city-sponsored event will emphasize health, with a special “Health Village” to provide attendees with free screening and testing during the festival. The festival is held annually in the parking lots near Camden Yards.
