Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich warned President Trump that he’s making special counsel Robert Mueller “more important” than he is by tweeting about him.
“What the president ought to do is quit tweeting about Mueller,” Gingrich argued Tuesday on Fox News. “Every time the president tweets about Robert Mueller, he makes Mueller bigger and more important. He’s the president of the United States. Mueller is a lawyer. The gap in their stature is enormous.”
Trump tweeted about Mueller by name for the first time over the weekend, questioning why the Russia investigation included more Democrats than Republicans. Mueller himself is a Republican who was appointed to lead the FBI under President George W. Bush.
Gingrich said Trump should instead be promoting the positive things happening in his administration, such as the economy and unemployment.
“He drowns all of those with these kind of tweets that actually do him harm, weaken the Republicans for 2018 in the election, and make Mueller more important. It’s really, really bad strategy by President Trump,” Gingrich said.
