Paul Ryan calls Hillary Clinton a ‘liberal progressive’

Should Hillary Clinton become president, she may find she has trouble working with House Speaker Paul Ryan.

According to the Wisconsin Republican, the presumed Democratic nominee is truly a “liberal progressive” — and that may cause trouble if they two should have to work together.

“I think she is actually a liberal progressive,” Ryan told Politico in an interview published Monday. “I don’t think she’s faking it. I think she’s a liberal progressive.

“And I think she’s sitting atop a party that’s now run by [Sens.] Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. This is not the Erskine Bowles 1996 Democratic Party. This is not Alice Rivlin, Erskine Bowles, or Bill Clinton in 1996,” he added.

Clinton, Sanders and Warren have now created a new, more left identity for the Democratic Party, Ryan explained.

“This is a Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders party,” he said. “Our party has moved right, their party has moved really left. I think the common ground, say that you had in the early 90s when I was here as a staffer is nothing like the common ground you have right now.”

Ryan also offered insight into another of number issues, from gun control to Clinton’s email scandal.

Ryan revealed that the House is “working on our legislation” when it comes to gun control, which he says has become “so bad and divisive.”

“I really worry that we’re all going to harden in go into our corners and be even more divided. I’m talking about the country. Congress … can contribute or can make it worse. We can either help heal, or harden. So I want to see what we can do to heal,” he explained.

There has been a strong push for gun control reform following a series of high profile deadly shootings nationwide, including a terror attack in Orlando and a deadly sniper attack on police in Dallas.

Ryan also said that the Republican focus on Clinton’s use of a private email server when she was secretary of state is not politically motivated.

“The motivation here isn’t partisanship,” he said. “The motivation here is you’ve gotta hold people accountable for these actions, otherwise we’re demeaning the whole value of these things

“The thing that bothers me the most is the double standard that seems to be applied,” Ryan added of Clinton. “Shouldn’t she be held to the same standard everybody else is? I worry about the rule of law being equally applied in this country these days.”
