Officer shoots robbery suspect, earns praise

A would-be bank robber picked the wrong target on Tuesday.

At 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Wachovia Bank on East Northern Parkway in Northeast Baltimore, an armed gunman entered the bank, Baltimore police said.

But his plans of robbery were quickly foiled when he noticed an off-duty Baltimore Police Department sergeant, in full uniform, who works as a security guard at the bank.

The man fired at the officer and missed, then the officer returned fire and struck him, police said.

The suspect was taken to Sinai Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else suffered an injury.

Wachovia spokeswoman Barbara Nate said the corporation was thankful for the officer?s quick actions.

“We are very grateful that there was no injury to customers, employees or the police officer,” she said. “The safety of employees and customers is our primary priority.”

Police spokeswoman Nicole Monroe said she did not know the bank robbery suspect?s name. She declined to release the sergeant?s name.
