Grocery store scion Peter Meijer latest Republican to challenge Amash in 2020

Rep. Justin Amash has another primary challenger.

Peter Meijer, an Iraq war veteran and the grandson of Meijer Grocery store owner Fred Meijer, announced today that he would challenge the Michigan Republican in 2020.

In his announcement video, Meijer touted his roots and his service in Iraq. He went onto say he has “ideas to bring to Washington” such as “securing our borders” and “ending senseless wars.” He also announced plans to travel throughout the district to learn about what the community cares about.

Meijer is the fourth person to challenge Amash in the Republican primary for his seat in 2020. Amash has served Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District since 2011 and has come under intense scrutiny from his own party after being the first Republican to support the impeachment of the president.

The three other candidates in the primary are state Rep. Lynn Afendoulis, state Rep. Jim Lower, and former Sand Lake Village Trustee Tom Norton.
