President Trump told a gathering of senators on Tuesday that he expects a “deal” on healthcare to happen “very quickly.”
Members of the Senate were invited to the White House for a reception.
At the event, also attended by Vice President Mike Pence and first lady Melania Trump, Trump seemed to be in a good mood on the heels of his party’s defeat last week when it failed to bring an Obamacare repeal bill to a vote last week.
“Nobody ever told me that politics was going to be so much fun,” Trump told the audience, according to press pool reports.
Turning to the senators in the room, Trump noted the “bipartisan” attendance.
“A lot of people showed up. People we weren’t expecting,” Trump noted. “I know that we are all going to make a deal on healthcare. That’s such an easy one. I have no doubt that that’s going to happen very quickly. We have all been promising it — Democrat, Republican — to the public. We are going to talk about fixing up our military, which we really need.”
Though both Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan initially indicated a pivot to tax reform, Trump has since tweeted about how Obamacare will “explode” and lawmakers will come together for a “great healthcare plan.”
