Mark Zuckerberg: Facebook developing ranking system for news outlet trustworthiness

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed Tuesday that the social media platform has started developing a system to rank news organizations for their trustworthiness.

The hierarchy will be decided by user surveys to conclude which outlets are “broadly trusted,” Zuckerberg said in a meeting with media executives following his keynote address at Facebook’s F8 developer conference Tuesday, according to BuzzFeed News.

The aim, he explained, would be to “further [break] down polarization and find common ground.”

Zuckerberg also noted that the social media platform intends to invest billions of dollars in an effort to cut down on the dissemination of misinformation. This would combine human moderators and artificial intelligence.

The meeting comes as a number of conservative outlets have complained that Facebook is possibly exhibiting bias against them and cutting into their traffic following an algorithm change to its newsfeed in January.
