Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel apologized Wednesday for drinking too much alcohol at a college football tailgate party last month in Lansing, Michigan.
A Facebook post from Nessel, a Democrat who is an alumna of the University of Michigan, said she had attended a football game between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University and got sick after drinking two bloody marys.
“I laid low for a while, but my friends recommended that I leave so as to prevent me from vomiting on any of my constituents (polling consistently shows ‘Roman showers’ to be unpopular among most demographics),” Nessel said in the post Wednesday. “I had a few folks help me up the stairs and someone grabbed a wheelchair so as to prevent me from stumbling in the parking lot. Like all smart people attending festivities where drinking occurs, I had a designated driver. I went home, fell asleep on the couch, and my wife threw some blankets on me and provided me with some water and Tylenol for what she knew would be a skull-crushing hangover the next day.”

Nessel apologized to supporters for what she dubbed “Tailgate-Gate,” including the state’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer.

The 52-year-old attorney general has been serving in the office since 2019 and has led battles against prescription drug abuse. She started Michigan’s Elder Abuse Task Force to help protect the elderly.
In her post, Nessel promised to never drink on an empty stomach again and to never have another bloody mary. She also highlighted the death of her longtime friend and communications adviser Kelly Rossman-McKinney, who died Tuesday night from cancer, according to Detroit News.

“I am human. Sometimes I screw up. This was definitely one of those times,” she said in her post. “My apologies to the entire state of Michigan for this mishap, but especially that Michigan fan sitting behind me. Some things you can’t un-see.”
