SEE IT: Jeff Fortenberry resigns following three felony convictions

Nebraska Rep. Jeff Fortenberry announced his resignation from Congress Saturday.

Fortenberry’s announcement comes two days after his conviction of three felony counts regarding a 2016 foreign campaign contribution. He will resign on Thursday.

“It has been my honor to serve with you in the United States House of Representatives,” Fortenberry wrote in a letter that included a quote from Mother Teresa. “Due to the difficulties of my circumstances, I can no longer effectively serve.”

CONVICTED HOUSE MEMBERS WHO WOULDN’T GO QUIETLY

Upon his indictment last fall, the Nebraska representative gave up his committee assignment on the House Appropriations Committee. Ever since his conviction, fellow Republicans in the House urged Fortenberry to quit. Among those calling for the resignation was House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

Fortenberry was a nine-term congressman in the middle of a reelection campaign when he was convicted Thursday. A Los Angeles jury convicted Fortenberry of one count of scheming to falsify and conceal material facts and two counts of making false statements to federal investigators. He lied amid a federal investigation of Lebanese-Nigerian billionaire Gilbert Chagoury’s donation of $180,000 across several transactions.
