Newly released pictures show WNBA star Brittney Griner’s living conditions in a Russian penal colony prior to her release in a prisoner swap that took place earlier today in which the United States and Russia exchanged the athlete and Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
The images, distributed by Tass, show vignettes of Griner’s daily life in Women’s Penal Colony No. 2 in Mordovia, Russia. Images show her waiting in line at the cafeteria, eating with a fellow inmate, making her bed, and working. The images stick out due to Griner’s height, easily towering over her fellow inmates.

Griner was arrested the week before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine after Russian officials said they found cannabis oil in her baggage. She was found guilty in August and sentenced to more than nine years in prison. She was moved to a penal colony in recent months, where the pictures were taken.

Griner was exchanged for Bout, who is known as the “Merchant of Death.” Bout was extradited from Thailand to the U.S. in a sting operation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and sentenced to 25 years for conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and officials, delivering anti-aircraft missiles, and aiding a terrorist organization.
