The mother of Charlottesville victim Heather Heyer will present a social justice award at the MTV Video Music Awards in California on Sunday.
“I want to continue her message of paying attention to what’s going on around you,” Susan Bro told the New York Times ahead of the star-studded event that will be hosted by singer Katy Perry.
“Don’t hide your head in the sand. Notice that people are having difficulties and then be accountable in whatever actions you chose so that you can look yourself in the mirror and say, ‘I did the right thing.'”
Bro, who has refused to take phone calls from the White House over her daughter’s death, has set up the non-profit Heather Heyer Foundation to honor her memory and promote interest in social justice careers.
Heyer, 32, died earlier in August when a man drove a car into a group protesting the white supremacist and neo-Nazi rally held in Charlottesville.
MTV’s “Best Fight Against the System” award celebrates activism regarding a range of issues, including gender and racial equality.
MTV has also invited active-duty transgender military troops to attend its 2017 gala in Inglewood, Calif., as a show of support after President Trump called for the group to be banned from the military.
