Russian soldier kills eight in execution-style shootings at Siberia military base

A Russian soldier at a military base in Siberia is said to have killed eight fellow troops and wounded two.

Authorities say the soldier, identified as Pvt. Ramil Shamsutdinov, killed two officers and six enlisted personnel Friday evening at a military garrison near the city of Chita. The two who were wounded are expected to recover.

The shooting is said to have occurred during a guard shift change. Shamsutdinov, a draftee, was detained after the massacre. Officials said that the man might have been suffering from mental health issues. The victims were believed to have been shot in the head.

A year of military service is required by all men aged 18 to 27 in Russia. In the past, human rights groups have reported widespread violence and hazing for new conscripts in the armed forces, although in recent years, Russia has said that has largely been weeded out.
