Anne Boone-Simanski: Towson?s ?formal? is ?funky? hit

Well, Mother Nature sure proved her gully-washer abilities are up to snuff this past weekend. But that didn?t put a damper on the 300 guests who gathered at the Center for the Arts at Towson University for a “Funky Formal.”

Tony Award-winning actor and TU alum John Glover, star of “Smallville,” joined co-chairs Gordon and Marsha Becker in presiding over an evening that was filled with yummy foods and fabulous people.

In case John Glover wasn?t enough glam power, Baltimore?s own Barry Levinson joined the fun with his funky sneakers, while Dyana Neal of WBJC-FM donned a vintage tiara and a black sequined gown. Towson President Bob Caret and his wife, Liz Zoltan, saw quite a number of boa-adorned ladies and gentlemen in tuxes with blinking bow ties winding through the Grand Hall that evening.

Also seen putting the “art” in “partying” were Towson alum Cindy Buschand her hubby, Maryland House Speaker Michael Busch. Others included event planning committee members Carole Sibel, Bob Jones of Jones Lighting, David Nevins, chair of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents, and Nan Rosenthal and Robin Wray from Johns Hopkins University. This formal was not only funky but also fun, fun, fun!

FROM FUNKY TO ?50s

Roland Park Country School went back to the days of poodle skirts and letterman jackets to support a live and silent auction as part of the school?s fundraising efforts. As the movie “Grease” played on the big screen, the patrons had a whole lot of shakin? going on while enjoying culinary delights from an “American Bandstand” of food stations. Even Headmistress Jean Waller Brune, class of 1960, was rockin? around the clock in her 1950s garb ? not to be outdone by the competitive Coach Blood, a.k.a. Debbie Bloodsworth, who graced the cover, dancing Fabian-style, of the auction booklet. Seen supporting this red-hot affair were RPCS parents Porter and Dr. Karen Siems and Paul and Karen Winicki; upper school head Joan Smith; the school?s director of finance, Duncan Booth, who also helps coach the varsity lacrosse team; and trainer extraordinaire Sharon Donato. Emceeing the event was Channel 13?s Marty Bass and his wife ? and school volunteer ? Sharon.

DON?T FORGET

“Dining out for Life” is being held Thursday, so be among the thousands of people in Baltimore dining out for a great cause. When you eat at one of the many participating restaurants, at least 20 percent of the restaurant?s proceeds for that day will help feed those in our community who are suffering from AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. For a list of establishments helping the Moveable Feast?s Dining Out for Life, go to diningoutforlife.com.
