Senate Intelligence Committee subpoenas Donald Trump Jr.: Report

A day after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell took to the Senate floor to declare “case closed” about the Russia investigation, reports surfaced that the Senate Intelligence Committee has issued a subpoena for Donald Trump Jr.

The committee, which is Republican-led, issued the subpoena in order to get answers about Trump’s prior testimony before Senate investigators during the Russia investigation, according to Axios.

In September 2017, Trump Jr. testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about proposed real estate plans for a Trump Organization project in Moscow. During testimony Trump Jr. said he was just “peripherally aware” of the plans. In a January interview on Fox News he claimed he knew little of the project, saying that President Trump’s former personal attorney and fixer Michael Cohen was behind the discussions.

“We don’t know anything about it. Ultimately, it was Michael Cohen essentially trying to get a deal done,” Trump Jr. said.

Despite Trump Jr. downplaying his involvement, Cohen made the claim before the House Oversight Committee in February that he had briefed the president’s son on the project about 10 times.

A Senate Intelligence Committee spokesperson told the Washington Examiner: “We do not discuss the details of witness engagements with the Committee. Throughout the investigation, the Committee has reserved the right to recall witnesses for additional testimony as needed, as every witness and witness counsel has been made aware.”

This is the first known congressional subpoena of any of Trump’s children.
