British PM Theresa May: ‘The terrorists will never win’

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday praised first responders in Manchester after an apparent terrorist attack that left 22 people dead and hundreds injured after a bomb went off at an Ariana Grande concert.

She also vowed once more that terrorists will never succeeded in disrupting western values.

“At terrible moments like these, it is customary for leaders, politicians and others to condemn the perpetrators and declare that the terrorists will not win,” she said. “But the fact that we have been here before, and the fact that we need to say this again does not make it any less true.”

She cheered the way people in the area opened their homes to the victims who ran screaming from the venue late at night.

“The cowardice of the attacker met the bravery of the emergency services and the people of Manchester,” she said. “The attempt to divide us met countless acts of kindness that brought people closer together. In the days ahead, those must be the things we remember.”

“Today, let us remember those who died, and let us celebrate those who helped, safe in the knowledge that the terrorists will never win, and our values, our country and our way of life will always prevail,” she said.

By Tuesday morning, authorities were saying 22 died in the attack, and that dozens were injured. Grande tweeted a message late Monday night saying she is “broken.”

“from the bottom of my heart, i am so sorry. i don’t have words,” she tweeted.

May said it is “beyond doubt” that the attack was an act of terror.

“This was among the worst terrorist incidents we have ever experienced in the United Kingdom,” she said. “And although it is not the first time Manchester has suffered in this way, it is the worst attack the city has experienced, and the worst ever to hit the North of England.”

She said 22 people had been killed in addition to the attacker, and 59 injured.

May added that the terrorism threat level remains at “severe,” which means another terrorist attack “remains highly likely.”
