Five killed and more than 50 others shot in Chicago over the weekend

Monday brought an end to a violent weekend in Chicago, where police said shootings left five people dead and more than 50 others injured.

A number of the victims shot between 4 p.m. on Friday and 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, which includes an 11-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, were struck while walking city sidewalks or sitting in vehicles. One man was shot while he was asleep in his bed, according to a review of police incident reports.

The 11-year-old girl was sitting inside a car at about 9 p.m. on Sunday when another vehicle drove by and fired multiple shots, striking her once in the lower back, police said. She was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

“The investigation is very active right now. Obviously, detectives are looking to speak to more people, looking for videos,” Chicago police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said during a press conference on Monday.

Eight people were wounded in one shooting incident that occurred at about 4 a.m. Sunday morning. Two occupants in a silver vehicle fired shots into the group of victims, who were standing on the sidewalk. Just before 7:30 p.m. on Friday, a 26-year-old man was riding a bicycle on the street when he was shot. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Five of the weekend’s shooting victims were killed, including a 23-year-old man who was shot and killed Friday while in a backyard in the Austin neighborhood of west Chicago.

Police also found a 24-year-old man unresponsive in a vehicle on Friday with gunshot wounds to the head and chest. Both were pronounced dead at the hospital.

A 43-year-old man was shot in the head Friday at about 9:21 p.m. as he was on a sidewalk in the city’s South Side. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“Much of the violence we see in Chicago is about the gang cultures, revenge, retaliation, and street justice,” Chicago police Superintendent David Brown said Monday.
