The former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd has been released from jail on Wednesday after posting his $1 million bond payment.
Ex-Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin has been in jail since his arrest on May 29. He was the last of the four Minneapolis officers involved in Floyd’s arrest to post bond and be released from jail while awaiting a trial.
Chauvin’s release was confirmed by the Minnesota Department of Corrections. His bond was signed by A-Affordable Bail Bonds of Brainerd, Minnesota.
Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter after video showed him kneeling on Floyd’s neck during an arrest on Memorial Day. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison added the second-degree murder charges when he took over the case.
The other officers involved in Floyd’s arrest, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng, and Tou Thao, were each charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. The four, who were fired from the Minneapolis police force the day after Floyd died, have their next court appearance set for March 8.
