Former national security adviser H.R. McMaster said it is inappropriate for the president of the United States to solicit a foreign government to gain advantage over a political opponent.
During a Foundation for Defense of Democracies event, McMaster responded to a question regarding President Trump’s request that Ukraine investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
“Of course, no,” he answered. “No, it’s absolutely not. And of course, what has to happen here is a — is, you know, seeing our democracy play out, right, the separation of powers play out, and for the American people through their representatives and representatives in Congress to make a judgment as to whether or not that happened. But to answer your question directly, of course it’s just not — it’s not appropriate.”
McMaster served as Trump’s second national security adviser when Trump chose him to replace Michael Flynn. Last March, McMaster was replaced by John Bolton, who left the White House last month.
